Research and critically discuss the implications of labor flexibility on the international management of human resources

Students may interpret the question broadly or choose to focus on particular aspects of IHRM to illustrate their argument. The assignment will be assessed on the extent to which the student is able to achieve the following learning outcomes:

1. display knowledge and understanding of the content, scope and limitations of labor flexibility in business, organisation and the international management of human resources

2. bring together and critically evaluate theoretical and critical perspectives on labor flexibility and IHRM,

3. integrate and reflect on in-class learning and independent study and research into the coursework,

4. formulate and communicate a well structured, researched and developed argument responding to the question, observing the academic standards of grammar, spelling and referencing.

1.    What are the advantages and disadvantages of the global matrix structure?
2.    What are issues of standardization and localization in general for MNEs, and how do they particularly manifest themselves in the IHRM activities?
3.    What are the specific HRM challenges in a networked firm?
4.    Country of origin can strongly influence a firm’s approach to organization structure. As MNEs from China and India internationalize, to what extent are they likely to differ from Japanese, European, and U.S. MNEs?

Unit III Assessment
1.    Why would a company enter into an international joint venture?
2.    There are three conceptual tools used between business strategy and HR strategy. What are these tools and how can they be used?
3.    What are the four phases of M&A, and what happens at each phase?
4.    What is the difference between merger and acquisition?

Unit IV Assessment
1.    Discuss the six roles of an expatriate.
2.    What are the five stressors impacting non-expatriates? Give a brief example of each.
3.    What are the four terms to describe MNE approaches to managing and staffing subsidiaries? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
4.    Discuss the externally and internally established barriers to females taking international assignments.

Unit V Assessment
1.    Discuss the components of the Mendenhall, Dunbar, and Oddou cross-cultural training model. What are the components of the model, and how does the training approach relate to each component?
2.    What skills and knowledge are acquired through a typical international assignment?

Unit V Case Study
Using your textbook, read the case study provided on pages 305-311. Once you have completed reading the case study, answer the question on page 310-311.
